- Naturally, you should review the resume for the person you are interviewing and the cover letter, if it's made available to you. But what are you looking for? My own preference is to read the cover letter first. While the resume may have been written by someone else, like a recruiting company, the candidate probably wrote the cover letter. A well-done cover letter doesn't have misspelled words or bad grammar. Especially with today's word processors highlighting those problems, if they are present, then I assume that the candidate lacks attention to detail. The cover letter may also contain an explanation of why they are applying for this particular position. This can help you understand the candidate's specific goals that apply to your team.
