As the quote goes, "boldness has genius, power and magic in it." any time you are designing a new app from scratch, and especially when it will replace an existing one, boldness is actually your safest course. You're far more likely to come up with innovative designs that make investment in the design process pay off. This is yet another way the strategy of multiple design options is a good one, it's easier to work through a bold design option when you know it's just one of many. If it doesn't work out, so be it. So the cost of being bold is low, while the potential pay off is high. I'd like to mention a potential side effect of being bold that could effect you personally.
