- Listening is one of the most important skills we can have as designers. I often find that when I really pay attention during a meeting with a new client, solutions reveal themselves to me. But first, I have to stop trying to impress them. Stop thinking about what I'm going to say next, stop thinking of defenses for any possible criticism. I have to focus only on asking questions and listening to the answers. At this point, it's not about me, it's about them. Solutions can be inspired, sometimes by one word, they say unconsciously, that opens up a window which leads to an idea. But if I'm only focused on the next thing, I'm going to say, I'll miss it. Stephen Covey wrote in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", "Most people don't listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply." And that was me.
