- Negative feedback is never what anyone wants to hear at any stage of the project. Clients do not enjoy giving it, either. Dealing with the reality of negative feedback is often the most challenging part of this business. I've been doing this for over 25 years and it can still throw me off and create great frustration or disappointment. I've found, though, that early on, it's critical for you to set the tone and take charge of the feedback before it goes sideways or gets hijacked by the loudest voice in the room. When I first started in this business, I would follow a certain process, do my research, ideate, and put together what I thought were amazing solutions for the client. And then after all that brain power and creative effort, I would unveil these solutions with the belief that the clients would look at my or my team's work and give us a standing ovation.
