- Moderated or unmoderated testing, what method is better? Well, this depends on several factors. One, does the method of testing you're using benefit more from moderated or unmoderated? Two, does the ability to moderate the testing play an important factor in what you learn? In considering those two essential questions, we do have to be careful. Sometimes, moderating the testing seems unimportant to what you may learn from unmoderated observation. And you find in hindsight that being able to make an observation in real time and probe further is important to truly understand what the participant is experiencing and feeling. Before we talk about an example, let's briefly touch on what moderated and unmoderated means. When you moderate testing, you are there or someone else to facilitate the testing.
