- A detail today. What the computer says and what our eyes see are not always the same. Design is full of optical illusion. Case and point, I was working recently on this graphic. It's a blend of solid and dotted lines, all the same width, they're eight points, but the solid lines look heavier. Can you see that? Which I didn't want. I thought I had to reduce the solids to six points like this. That's 25% thinner for the lines to feel the same. Zoom in, perhaps we can see this more clearly. Same thing, both lines are the same width, in this case 48 points, but the solid looks whiter. But then at the 36 points like this, there's some leeway in here, they look more alike. Or here, these lines look similar but really are quite different. The solid is 46 points and the dotted is 63, that's more than 30% wider. The reason for the illusion is this.
