- As part of project management, we need to understand that one of the major factors to success is understanding our clients. A systematic process or approach is only as good as its inclusion of those involved and its ability to help everyone be all in. There are several key steps to successfully onboard your client and help keep your sanity. I introduced the steps earlier, and now let's focus on a few more specifics. I have learned all this the hard way over the years. For example, I have spent months and, in some case, years landing a big account, only to mess things up because I did not double-check a few key steps at the beginning of a project. As a result, my failure ended up making the project more difficult and, at times, even sinking the project before it even started.
