How to talk about budgets

- Budget is important. Understanding the client's budget will give you the proper context to understand how, or even if, the client may value the project and your expertise. Yet, most creatives avoid discussing budgets like the plague. And this is because of three core reasons. They think the client will not answer the question, so why ask them? My answer to this is why not ask? How can it hurt? Creatives prefer to make assumptions about the answers, but these assumptions are usually incorrect and are just an excuse to avoid the conversation. They fear the client will be offended in some way. In reality, the prospect may also just prefer to avoid the topic. But someone has to take the bull by the horns, so why not you? Otherwise, if you both avoid some difficult, but necessary questions, you are left trying to guess what the other is thinking.
