- [Instructor] Once the team has overall context…for the design project by understanding…the business needs and the design priorities,…it's time to get into the details.…To understand what users need and like,…it's necessary to observe them,…and ideally that's in their actual work environment.…Having meetings with users to just talk to them…about their work is almost never as effective…as seeing them do real work.…When you observe users, you need to keep firmly in mind…that you are there to learn and not to teach.…
Don't judge the way they do work.…Just observe it and learn from it.…It's not necessary to understand every detail…of how they do their work.…A lot of it might be changed during design anyway.…Zero in on the things that don't work well…and where the user's pain points are.…For a set of users numbering in the dozens or hundreds,…there will be some natural variation.…Some will be more serious power users.…Some will use the system more rarely.…Ideally, you will want to observe users…across that whole spectrum.…
