Welcome

- Typography is a deep and wonderful world. I'm Ina Slatz and I'd like to welcome you to Foundations of Typography: Hierarchy and Navigation. If you've seen my lynda.com course Foundations of Typography or, if you are already a designer with a working knowledge of typography. This course is a next step, a deeper dive into the specifics of these important guiding principles. This course will be filled with great examples. It's not about the how, there are plenty of lynda.com courses to show you how to use the software. This course is about the why of hierarchy and navigation. Hierarchy is how we perceive the order of things. Specifically, it's how pieces of content are designed so that viewers clearly understand their order of importance or urgency. As a designer, you're responsible for prioritizing information for your viewer. Navigation goes hand in hand with hierarchy. Typographic elements and devices point viewers in the right direction to keep them on track, to guide them to their destination in the right order of steps. We're going to get up close to the details of type so you can get a better sense of why hierarchy and navigation work the way they do to help you make the best design choices for your projects. You're in good hands, I'm passionate about letter forms. For more than 30 years I've been deeply involved in the world of type. I live, eat and breathe typography and I'm excited to share hierarchy and navigation with you.
