Warm-up: The envelope

- Another strategy for establishing a strong framework for our figure drawing is something called the envelope. A cool way to practice this is to encapsulate our model in a body-size stretchy fabric bag. As she transitions from pose to pose the dramatic perimeter for the pose is evident as the extremities of the body push against the fabric. I'm going to try this with my model now. So, you can see the model in the bag and I'm going to start on the upper left side where I know her hand is pushing up against the inside of the fabric. Then I'm going to skirt over to the top of her head, which is right about here, and all I'm doing is I'm tracing around the overall envelope, that the way the bag just stretches around her. And this simplifies the form. It simplifies the form and I'm kind of hooking on the places that push against the bag the most. It's really showing me what points are furthest to the right, what points are furthest down. Going from the shoulder all the way down to that…
