Using materials effectively

- Familiarizing yourself with basic materials and surfaces will get you off to a great start. You don't need to break the bank to draw. The only thing you really need to begin this course is a pencil and some paper. But here are a few additional tools I use to make it easier to draw. For a surface, a basic spiral-bound drawing pad is ideal. You can also opt for newsprint paper which is less expensive and great for multiple quick drawings. For the larger sketch pad, you may want to have a rigid board behind it to ensure that your drawing pad stays flat. Clips are also useful to hold the paper in place. Because figure drawing is such a physical act, I don't recommend working very small, however, having a small portable sketch book is ideal for sketching at cafes, at sporting events, and in the park.
