- So now we've got the burnt umber down, we can start to add some white to the painting. You see already in my water, this already got really, really dark. For this stage, just for the white underpainting, it'll be fine like this, but for the next stage we'll then have to change the water again. Enough I might use two pots of water, one for washing out the brushes, and another one just for dipping in for clean water, and this way if you just wanna get the whites to go a bit further, or your paints to go a bit further, you can just dip into the clean water every time. So just with the filbert brush again. I dip it into the water just slightly on the edge I can now start to block in some of these lighter tones. And again I'm just using the side of the filbert, and kind of scrubbing it into the canvas, really. So I'm covering over the color ground, using that ground color just to add a bit of warmth to the white so it's not so stark. As you become more experienced with painting, you can…
