Symbolism
In this chapter, we're going to breakdown the various tools in a designer's arsenal. Symbolism, iconography, color, typography, style, and we'll try to match each of them up with the wonderful witchcraft of story telling. Lets begin with symbolism and iconography. Symbolism is perhaps the single most important factor to master in order to tell stories with pictures, I can't emphasize that enough. If you're not sure why I say that think about why symbolism works. What is a symbol? Generally, it's an object representing a concept. A symbol provides a shorthand meaning and often even adds meaning that's deeper and more significant. Here's an example, the two most famous symbols for peace, the dove often carrying an olive branch, and the circular peace symbol. The origins of these two images are quite different. The dove dates back to antiquity and Jewish traditions where the dove was a symbol for peace and the peace icon we all recognize around the world began as a logo designed in 1958…
