- Setting up your home studio or workspace effectively will allow you to practice figure drawing with greater ease. Standing at an easel is preferable. With practice, you can get into the habit of proper easel use. You should always have your body open to the figure, and have the center of your sketch pad at about eye level. This way you're open to your subject and not blocking your view by drawing over your arm. A side table is also a nice idea to put your supplies on. If you need to sit to draw, you can use a drafting table at a slant, or prop your drawing board up. If you draw with the board flat, you will get all sorts of distortions which we'll want to avoid. When you set up your lighting, you want to be sure you aren't casting your own shadow on the drawing surface. This is just distracting. Acquiring a simple clamp lamp from your local hardware store or using a desk lamp will suffice to illuminate your workspace. Using natural light is ideal and artist's have historically…
