Placing weight and balance: Foot placement

- Part of establishing where the weight of the figure falls, is establishing proper foot placement. Without establishing how the feet meet the ground, you won't be able to create a believable sense of weight and balance. I'm going to place this piece of vellum over my drawing. Notice how this creates a container for the region of the lower legs and feet. Within this container, between the lower legs, and between the outer side of the lower legs and the edge of this rectangle. This area, we're going to call negative shape. Negative shape is basically the air that exists between your subject and the edge of a container. And sometimes these shapes are very beautiful, and they really resonate once you really start paying attention to them. This is going to help us establish the placement of the feet because in realizing this exact shape, and starting to really look for it in all of your drawings, you're going to establish the feet and the lower legs and other parts of the body in…
