Opacity vs. transparency

- So the other thing to consider when you're choosing a paint to use for your painting is the opacity or the transparency of the particular pigment that you are using. So what I've got here is two different reds. I've got a cadmium red light here on the left and a quinacridone red here on the right. You can just see on the front swatches that are on the front of the paint tubes how that the cadmium red light is more opaque when it's covered over the black marks underneath in comparison to the quinacridone. So this means if you were looking for something where you wanted a very transparent application of the paint, if we were going to do a glaze that had a nice fine quality to it. Let's put a glaze and liquid here. You can see how with the quinacridone it's got this lovely translucent quality so that you can lay that color on top of other colors and you'll still be able to see the colors that are underneath it.
