- The body is a beautiful organic architectural structure. Without realizing how the basic skeletal parts relate in space, we can't build a believable body. Just like you can't build a house without a core framework, you can't draw the figure without an awareness of what the skeleton is doing. Building a figure drawing, an artist must actively make horizontal and vertical associations between the joints and space. Think of it as plotting coordinates on a map, or constellation points in the night sky. These landmarks are at the joints. I like to refer to these as access points. I have this beautiful image here of our model Sarah, and what I'm going to do is take a piece of tracing paper, I'm going to lay it right on top of this image, and I encourage you to try this too with drawings, just to sort of create an overlay that you can work on top of.
