- The human body is so fascinating! One of the most important things to capture in a figure drawing is the essential gesture. Essential gesture is the energy created by the body's dynamic position in space. Capturing the essential gesture will create fluid energy and movement throughout the drawing. The quick sketch is done in a limited time frame and has to be reactive. The reason I want you to practice these quick sketches is so you can connect with the drawing process and build stamina. It's always better to overemphasize the gesture to connect with the energy of the pose. Sarah, let's get started. Sarah's going to hold these poses very briefly, and I'm just going to trace the energy of her body from her head to her toe. Now she shifted. Notice how the shape of the pose changes. I'm going through this L shape down to the ground, and then she's shifting again. Look at the S curve of the spine all the way down to the foot. So we're tracing this S curve and we're noticing…
