Rocks and mountains

(gentle guitar music) - The shapes and textures of rocks in the landscape can be a really fascinating subject in their own right. And this is the edge of a dry stone wall in Scotland and I was really drawn to it because I loved all these interesting shapes and tones that are within it. So the area here that I find of real interest is this central area where I've got all these nice darks and lights, different patterns come in here on the side of the rock. Once I've got that dark pattern mapped out, I can then start to add different textures into the drawing. And here I'm just looking for the dark shapes at the center of the rocks. And I'm drawing a line and then shading my pencil right up to it. So there aren't any gaps at all and I'm creating these little solid dark shapes. Once I've got the first shape established I can now jump my eye and then look for the next nearest dark shape. So I'm initially just looking at this pattern of the darks.
