- The Arts and Crafts movement was based on pride of work and a rejection of the mechanization of labor. Women were an integral part of the movement, working across multiple fields, from textiles to ceramics to architecture. Julia Morgan is perhaps one of the movement's greatest architects in the United States. Julia Morgan was born in San Francisco in 1872. She was educated at University of California, Berkeley and went to Paris to study at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1904 Morgan became the first woman licensed to practice architecture in the United States. She is best known for the design and construction of publisher W.R. Hearst's legendary California coastal estate San Simeon, or Hearst Castle. But Morgan's influence was far greater than just San Simeon. Over her career she designed almost 700 buildings, many of them now considered architectural masterpieces. One-third of her commissions came from women's colleges and organizations.
