- [Instructor] Keep in mind there is some overlap within these movies about what makes a good art director, so forgive me, but it's all really important. I don't consider the creative part of our job to be so much a responsibility for me as it is an honor, so I'm going to leave that for the end. The biggest official responsibility has to do with money, of course, and budgets and contracts and expenses and keeping track of all of it without sacrificing the freedom that you need for experimentation and failures, frankly. Sometimes ideas come quickly, and other times, it can take time. So it's important to be able to accurately estimate how much time and effort will be needed to get a job done. That will play a part in determining the budget, but it's not the only factor. I actually don't even believe designers should ever charge by the hour.
