Now that I've explained what goes into a Designer-Client Agreement, let's talk about how to use it. How should you approach implementing contracts in your practice? I'll walk you through a project workflow overview. First, you'll get a call from the client. Typically you'll meet to a portfolio review and listen to a client problem. You get briefed on the project, hopefully the client will give you some idea about the schedule as well. From this information you'll scope the work and price it. Next, you will create a Designer-Client Agreement that would be based on a standard template you've created but customized for this project. Then you'll submit it and get the client to approve and sign the agreement. Once it's approved, then and only then will you start design. My best advice to you, never practice design without an approved agreement. Once your agreement is approved, I recommend that you invoice the client for partial payment on the project.
