Essential skills of an art director
- Before we talk about the skills needed to be a good art director, keep in mind that this is a creative endeavor, and there are a million ways to be a great art director and an amazingly inspiring person. Everybody has a unique collection of talents and experiences, and these add up to a unique set of skills applied uniquely by each person. Okay, but here I go anyway. The first essential skill I'm going to talk about is the ability to find and hire good people, otherwise known as talent. Being able to identify talented people is hugely important and not so easy, especially when you're looking at portfolios of people who are very young. Oftentimes their portfolios are not organized clearly, or they're showing you too much work, or they're not showing you enough work, or more likely, their work is more reflective of their professors or their first jobs than of what they're capable of.
