The components of a mailpiece
- Anybody can send something through the mail, but sending great mail, effective mail, is what's really important. The goal is to get results. I'm going to identify for you the key components that can contribute to a greater likelihood of success. This should give you a basic framework for creating your mail pieces. Now, what is interesting about mail is that, for the classically trained designer, the rules basically fly in the face of what is defined as "good design." This is not to say that mail can't be gorgeous, it absolutely can be, but the design formula for direct mail is much different than it is for a marketing brochure. We're going to focus on the most basic form of mail, the card-format mailer. Your design strategy, and some of the necessary components or characteristics, will change as you move into more sophisticated mail formats, but consider this your baseline.
