The address
- If I had to come up with the single most important element in the mail production process, hands down it would be the address. Size and proportion and thickness of mail and many of the other physical characteristics we have been talking about throughout this course are all very important, but you can still mail something that isn't in the optimal proportion. You can still mail something that's a little thick or inflexable. You may pay through the nose for it, but it's still mailable. You can throw an undersized postcard into an envelope and, instantly, it becomes mail again, but the address, the address, is the destination for the mail. Mail without an address is just a pile of marketing materials. And the address is also the key to sorting, which can lead to postage discounts, so mail is not mail without the address, and when you think of it that way, the pressure is on.
