Paper choice

- Mail is tactile, it's one of its greatest qualities. The physicality of mail allows it to activate your senses, and ultimately become memorable, so paper choice is a pretty big decision. Also, it's important to note that if you want your letter-sized mail to be processed by machine it has to be made of paper. In letter mail, non-paper sub straights automatically receive a non-machinable surcharge. So, some of the paper related choices in mail are driven strictly by regulation. Different types of self-mailing formats have thickness minimums and maximums, and here's a list of the min max paper requirements for some of the more popular self-mailing letter formats. Postcards can be anywhere from 0.007 of an inch to 0.016 of an inch in thickness. Folded self-mailers must be made of at least 70 pound book weight paper if they weigh under an ounce and 80 pound book if they're over an ounce.
