- If you mail a lot, or work with people who do, you've definitely heard the word presort used in conversation. You'll also see the word presort used in mailing endicias. Pre-sort is the term used to describe the situation where the marketer delivers the mail to the USPS already sorted, containerized, and also with the proper paperwork, instead of delivering a pile of mail in random order that the USPS will ultimately have to sort. The reason marketers sort their mail in advance, or presort, is to achieve lower postage rates in exchange for doing some of the work. You see, the more work the mailer does before the USPS receives the mail, the less work USPS has to do. So it's easier and faster for them to process the mail. They really like that, given the tremendous volume of mail they're processing everyday. So in exchange for the effort, they give you larger discounts on postage.
