- Have you ever looked at a piece of mail and wondered why it has the formal message, "Address Service Requested?" That little message is called an ancillary service endorsement, and these endorsements are used by mailers to request an addressee's new address, and to provide the USPS with instructions on how to handle undeliverable as addressed, or UAA, pieces of mail or, as the USPS calls them, mail pieces. In fact, in 2011, undeliverable mail cost companies a total of $1.3 billion in wasted postage. Boy, it's almost hard to wrap your brain around that number. In light of this, many mailers choose to use ancillary endorsements to cut down on wasted postage, and to ensure that they're not mailing into a black hole. If you choose to use an ancillary service endorsement on a mail piece, as the mailer, you're on the hook for any applicable charges for forwarding, return, and separate address notification charges.
