- [Narrator] So now that we understand the roles and responsibilities of the Oracle Listener process, which is basically to act as a gateway between clients and the Oracle database. Let's talk a bit about how clients actually establish a connection to an Oracle database going through an Oracle Listener. In order to connect, Oracle clients need to use a connection string. That connection string will point to the correct Oracle Listener and the correct Oracle instance. An Oracle connection string is a type of address used by all Oracle clients to establish a connection to an Oracle database. In order to establish a connection with an Oracle database, our Oracle client will need to know the following. One, the host name of the machine where the Oracle Listener is running. Remember, the listener and instance are usually running and located on the same physical machine. Two, the network port the listener is using for, well, listening.
