Troubleshoot using the Alert Log

- [Narrator] The Oracle database error log file is called the alert log. It contains a chronological list of events, errors, warnings, everything that has occurred in the database since it was created. It's the go to file when a DBA needs to troubleshoot infrastructure problems of the Oracle database. The alert log file is a plain text file we can easily open with any text editor. Let's start off by searching for the location of the alert log. It's placed in a subdirectory inside our Oracle base directory. We can see the value of our Oracle underscore base directory by typing echo $Oracle_BASE into the Linux prompt. Remember environment variables such as Oracle base as well as others need to be configured by the DBA. So let's go and open the Oracle base directory. Cd /u01/app/oracle. Inside the Oracle base directory, we have a sub directory called diag short for diagnostics. Let's go into that directory.
