Start and stop the instance
- [Instructor] We can start up and shut down the Oracle database instance directly using sequel plus. We can do that by opening a sequel plus prompt using the sysdba oracle user. You write sqlplus space, quotation mark, back slash, as, space, sysdba. This will open a database connection as the sys or sysdba user which is the most powerful Oracle user. We need to connect to that user in order to be able to successfully start up and shut down the Oracle instance. We can shut down the instance by simply typing shut rephrase. We can shut down the instance by typing shutdown immediate. Shutdown immediate is the most common instance shutdown method. It will disconnect existing users and will roll back any running transaction. It will also make sure the database is shut down cleanly so no automatic recovery will be needed at start up.
