- [Instructor] The next process in our list of Oracle background processes is the System Monitor process. This background process performs recovery during the startup sequence of the Oracle Instance if required. So there you have it. There's actually not much to talk about regarding the System Monitor process. It does a job with diligence. Oh, one more thing before we move forward. The System Monitor process is also responsible for cleaning up any unused temporary segments. For example, if the Oracle database allocates temporary space to facilitate the creation of a new index, and that operation fails, the System Monitor process cleans up and reclaims that temporary space.
