Control files

- [Instructor] Now it's time to discuss the purpose of the Oracle Database Storage Control File. Each Oracle database has a unique control file that contains data about the database itself. Sounds funny, but I'm not kidding. The control file contains information about the physical properties of the database, properties such as the database names, names and locations of the data files and redolog files which belong to this database, checkpoint information, to name a few. By the way, by names and locations of data files and redolog files, I mean that the control file actually stores the complete path of where the data files and redolog files exist on disk. When an Oracle instance starts up, it will need to know the location of the control file in order to know where the data files and redolog files are located. Only after the database instance has read the control file it will be able to read the data files and redolog files and continue with its normal startup sequence. Oracle has…
