What's the difference between wisdom and experience?

(upbeat music) - In this case of data and technology, one of the things I think that's really important is to separate the idea of experience and wisdom. Experience is what we go through and we gather. Wisdom is what happens when we reflect on the experience. So in that way a person who's a data scientist has developed a tremendous amount of wisdom by working with messy datasets and other things. That continues to add value, because you have developed the wisdom on top of that experience. There's that old joke of the person who you call in to fix a machine and they come in and they kick it in one spot and thy give you this huge bill, and they're like why is the bill so high and you're just like because he knew where to kick it. That adage is still true and so how do people leverage as technology increases but build up that wisdom? And we have a big conversation that needs to be had in this country around job displacement, especially as we start seeing the increasing revolution that's about to take place around automation and AI. Even as the world of automation takes off, there's an incredible wisdom in the person who knows how to do deep level machining. There's an art that's in there that a machine cannot replace at this time. People talk about AI and replacing the doctor, there's a deep insight that physicians have that is humanity, that is care, and that's not something that just gets taken way just because we have new, great, profound algorithms.
