Explore the profound ways in which data science affects how government and our political process works.
- [Barton] When people think of data science, they generally think of giant tech companies like Amazon or Apple, and while those companies have enormous investments in data science, and they have enormous market capitalization, nothing in the private sector compares to the scale or value of government. The good news is that data science can be just as beneficial and just as insightful to government as it can to the private sector. I'm Barton Poulson and in this brief course we'll take a non-technical, conceptually-oriented look at how data science can be used to understand governments and politics.
We'll explore the ways that data science works in the public sector, like governmental portals for open data or civic analytics. We'll see how predictive analytics can be used to understand political representation or explore national security. And we'll look at the ways that data science affects important political issues like social justice and individual privacy. Because this is a non-technical overview, anyone with an interest in the effectiveness of their government's functioning, regardless of their technical background, can get important ideas and insights from this course.
And so let's get started with The Data Science of Government and Political Science.
