How can data inform healthcare?

(upbeat music) - The opioid crisis is the one big example of opening up how drugs are being prescribed in the United States and seeing like, oh no, there's this big crisis developing. But there's been unbelievable amounts where people are also looking in healthcare around datasets that show the quality of how one physician compares to another, and one region versus another, and being able to look at that for how the ecosystem works. The other big ones that are out there are these datasets in genomics and genetic data. There's a Genetic Data Commons that's housed in Chicago, supported by the National Institutes for Health. That is kind of this giant repository of this data. As all this is coming together in what President Obama launched as a Precision Medicine Initiative, and that is the National Institutes of Health are launching it as the All of Us campaign, which is anybody that's here in the United States can donate their data to researchers so that we'll have the largest dataset ever constructed of not only our genomic data, but our environmental and health records all combined to understand how do we create tailored drug treatments.
