- [Instructor] The Roman emperor Trajan earned the title optimus princeps, or the best ruler from the Roman Senate, in part because of his first of its kind social welfare policies that he instituted in Rome nearly 2000 years ago. Similarly, one of the most significant developments for the well-being of people in the United States was when Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the original version of the Social Security Act in 1935, giving guarantees of basic well-being and support to citizens in the United States who had just lived through The Great Depression. But, social security is expensive and one of the things you don't want is people taking money from it that's supposed to be for other people who genuinely need it. That raises a specter of fraud and by extension, the need for fraud detection. This is where data science comes in to the agency work of federal governments.
