Learn how to use video scopes in DaVinci Resolve to properly evaluate footage.
- Hi, there, I'm Robbie Carman, and welcome to Resolve Guru: Mastering Scopes. The Resolve Guru series is all about diving deeper into one area, technique or workflow involving DaVinci Resolve. So in this title, we're gonna explore, in detail, how to use DaVinci Resolve's video scopes to evaluate footage. While it might be tempting to simply trust your eyes when looking at a shot, the fact is, your eyes and your mind lie to you all the time.
Video scopes, on the other hand, provide real and valuable data about what the video signal is really doing. With this evaluation data, you can do lots of things, like quickly fix problematic clips, matte shots together and create repeatable looks. As a professional colorist, I couldn't imagine color correcting and grading without scopes. They're just that important. And in this title, I wanna show you what you need to know about using scopes inside of DaVinci Resolve.
As an added bonus, once you know how to read scopes in Resolve, you know how to read them anywhere. We'll start out the title by exploring some key concepts, like the different types of scopes that are available, meaning software scopes, hardware units and hybrid models. We'll then explore opening and configuring scopes in Resolve, and look at some key vocabulary common to all scopes. In chapters two through five, we'll break down the four scopes that DaVinci Resolve offers, learning about various options available on each scope, how to read a particular scope and what that scope can tell us about the video signal.
We'll wrap up putting what we've learned into practice by evaluating shots using all the scopes, and then how to match both contrast and color of two clips and how to best use scopes to guide you in building a look. While image evaluation and using scopes might not, on the surface, seem all that exciting, talk to any colorist about the things that have helped them hone their craft and almost universally, they'll say knowing how to properly evaluate footage.
