Using scopes: Analyzing contrast and exposure

- Now we've selected our hero shots and that's the first step. The next step is to start evaluating those hero shots. And a professional colorist evaluates an image, basically looking at three different components, contrast, hue and saturation. In this movie, we're going to start by using the tools that help us evaluate contrast, which was often referred to as exposure. Contrast and exposure are all about the brightness of an image, and the relationship of the darkest values to the brightest values and where the stuff in between lives between those two extremes. Now when evaluating an image, we can't sit here and actually stare at the image itself. The problem is our brains will start to auto-balance the image after about 45 seconds or a minute. The more we look at an image, the more correct that image looks. So we use scopes and these scopes help us make our first initial decisions about an image.
