Useful new keyboard shortcuts

- In earlier versions of DaVinci Resolve we've been able to customize our keyboard or adapt our keyboards so it matches other non-linear editing systems, but in Resolve 12 we've gotten more options available to us so I want to share with you some of my favorite keyboard commands including a couple that were around in the previous version or two of Resolve that you may have missed. The big one here is the keyboard shortcuts that let's us navigate to each of the pages directly. So, from the color page I press shift + 2 that will take me to the media page, if I want to jump onto the deliver page shift + 8. If I want to jump to the add a page from here, shift + 4. Now, shift + 3, 5, 7, 9, I have no idea why those don't do anything. Why they didn't just go 1, 2, 3 and 4. Beats me, but guess what? It's DaVinci Resolve, we can go and make those keyboard assignments if we want to. Now, another one that you may know about, but you may not. This is not brand new in Resolve 12. But I know a lot of colorists miss it. I've got this timeline here, I've got three shots already graded and shot number four is not color corrected. You'll notice new in this interface instead of the little rainbow underneath the shot. We now have a rainbow on the shot number letting us know that a shot has been color corrected. So, shot four is untouched, and I want to copy a previous grade into shot four. Well, there are two keyboard shortcuts that allow us to do that. The = key will copy the grade from the shot immediately before us. In this case, shot three, I press = and I've now pulled up the grade from shot three. If I want to copy from two, two shots back I can use the - key, right next to the = key. And that will copy from two shots back. Great little useful shortcut. The other thing I want to show you is how many more of our menu items are now assignable. Not every pull down menu has been assigned and in previous versions, we've looked at those and said there's a menu item I really wish I could turn into a keyboard shortcut. Guess what? You know can. Here's some of my suggestions on some of these that you may want to assign keyboard shortcuts to. The first thing is I'm going to use shift + 9 to pull up our project settings. Then, I'll jump into keyboard mapping, in order to create my own custom keyboard shortcuts I have to create a new user. I'm going to go a head and do that, I'll a create a new one. And I'm going to call this Patrick. Click okay. And now, you'll notice there's one to one relationship between the menus up here and these items that we can assign keyboard shortcuts to. So, if I take a look here in the workspace menu and look at open effects, there's no shortcuts assigned to that. Well, when I take a look at the workspace menu it reflects that. So, wherever I see I'm going to pull down a window something that's empty that doesn't have a shortcut applied to it, you can absolutely in Resolve 12 create your own shortcut. Here's some of my favorites that I have been working with so far, under the playback menu. Use optimized media if available. I find myself kind of toggling this thing on and off and I've went ahead and on my home rig set this up as a keyboard shortcut. Under the mark menu, one of the ones that drives me nuts is the keyframe timeline mode. How many times do you add a keyframe and your still here in the all setting. Wouldn't it be great if you could assign a keyboard shortcut that just goes a head and drops you right into color automatically. That's the kind of keyboard shortcut I'm looking for and you can do that right here in the keyframe timeline mode I can set color to my own keyboard shortcut. Finally, another one that I'm always toggling on and off and I really wished forever that we had a shortcut for under the view menu, show current clip with handles. So, those are just a couple of ideas as to how you can start customizing DaVinci Resolve to speed up your interaction, basically get your hand off the mouse and get you more on your control surface and more on your keyboard so you are color correcting more efficiently.
