3/4/2016Indie feature film and broadcast colorist Patrick Inhofer puts these more sophisticated features to practical use—color-grading shots from a documentary. Along the way, he covers the Resolve Studio databases, media management, advanced primary and secondary color-correction techniques, and even Resolve performance optimization. - Hello and welcome to DaVinci Resolve 12 advanced training. I'm Patrick Inhofer, and you are about to deepen your knowledge of DaVinci Resolve. Now my goal for you during this title is to move you from knowing DaVinci Resolve, to being a savvy user of Davinci Resolve. And it doesn't matter what kind of work you do. Corporate videos, documentaries, shorts, feature films, or yes, whisker the cat's Youtube Channel, you will learn the features and workflows that make Resolve one of the most efficient and flexible tools of it's kind.
Now I'm calling this advanced resolve 12 training. What do I mean by advanced? Well in the DaVinci Resolve 12 essential's training I focused on the core feature set that 80% of Resolve users need to know to get their work done. I wanted to make you competent in Resolve as quickly as I could, while making sure I answered the questions most frequently asked. This training supplements that title, turning you into a savvy Resolve user.
You'll learn the additional features, many of them only introduced to Resolve only in the last year or two, designed to support it's core mission, making us faster while color grading. Plus, you'll be exposed to features designed to support more complicated workflows, if you want to more carefully manage the behaviors of Resolve. You'll also see Resolve's studio's motion effects put to use and how streamlined it's noise reduction tools really are.
Just remember, those tools are only available if you have a physical USB dongle. Which you can by from a Black Magic design reseller, or shipped as a bonus add-on if you buy any Black Magic camera except for the pocket camera, which does not include a Resolve Studio dongle. Also, I am really excited about the in action chapters at the end of this training. Those chapters in my mind are some of the most valuable movies in both the Resolve Essentials and Resolve advanced titles.
You'll move from learning sliders and widgets and pull-downs to figuring out how to actually attack color correction. I'll share with you my best teaching advice from the "3-Pass Workflow" to what I call the singularity effect and how working within the rules of those concepts makes color correction much, much easier. Because you're gonna end up with a simple repeatable workflow that will adapt to almost any project you're working on. Now, as I said in my earlier Resolve essentials training, Resolve is in version 12.
It's a very mature app. There is no need to rush your way through these movies. Follow along with me. Do the exercises, even only if it's from videos pulled off of your iPhone. Because becoming Resolve savvy requires you to execute what we're talking about. And by doing these videos you will literally be firing neurons connecting your hands, to your eyes, and to your brain. You will retain more information and accelerate your learning.
Now if you have access to the exercise files, you'll be able to follow along with me and not worry about crashing and burning with a client in the room. This is a safe zone. Experiment. Explore. Have fun. But remember, the footage I'm sharing with you here has been generously licensed to us from a real life feature documentary. Please, respect their copyright. Don't share this footage. Who am I? I'm Patrick Inhofer, a professional colorist with over 25 years experience in video post production and color correction. My color correction software skills are mostly self taught, so I have gone through your pains. And I remember my early color correction confusion.
