Colorist lingo: What is a vignette?

- Before we move through the rest of this chapter and really start digging deep into power windows, I want to pause so we're all taking about the same thing when it comes to a vignette, because vignettes are such an important technique and others will assume you know it. What is a vignette? It's a term you'll hear other colorists use all the time. It has its heritage in photography. In the image on the left here, this is a classic vignette. It has a bright, clear focal point and notice how the image fades and feathers getting much darker on the outside. This total effect, it's a vignette. The one here is obvious and dramatic. The vignette can forcefully focus the eye but you can also go much less dramatic and that is what I usually use it for. It can be very subtle, practically invisible, and even then it has an unmistakable ability to draw the viewer's attention to a central focal point. I love my subtle vignettes.
