Colorist lingo: What is a secondary correction?

- This chapter is all about secondary corrections. In this movie we're going to talk about what are secondary corrections. You hear this term banding about a lot but it's very likely you're not quite sure what encompasses a secondary and how is it different from a primary correction? Secondaries are all about isolating and changing a specific portion of the image or multiple parts of the image. Colorists will frequently call this "image segmentation". We do it for a couple reasons, oftentimes it's to fix a specific problem such as a blown out window, an over-saturated shirt. It could be for creative goals, where we want to de-saturate all the color except maybe on the lead character. That would be a creative goal. But for me, the biggest use of a secondary is to control the audience's eye, because in today's fast paced editing style a shot is typically on screen for no more than three or four seconds.
