Colorist lingo: What is a primary correction?
- In this chapter you're going to learn the tools in DaVinci Resolve 12 for making primary corrections. But first, we have to answer the question, what's a primary correction? It's basically a term of art, and it's not very clear to color correction newcomers what exactly I'm talking about when I'm talking about making primary corrections. So let's get our lingo in sync. When I talk about a primary correction, I'm talking about the first correction I execute, and that first correction generally affects the entire image. It's funny, when people hear color correction they think about taking a blue shirt and turning it yellow and that's certainly one aspect of color correcting, but when I'm talking about making a primary correction, that's not it. I'm talking about making the big, honking corrections first. I'm looking at the entire image, deciding what is fundamentally wrong or right with this image, and then I adjust it to set the foundation of that image. Only then do I move along to…
