Setting the marks

Male 1: So the most important step when using a Follow Focus is setting your marks. And there's 2 places that we're going to actually set our marks. The first place is, that we're going to set our marks is actually on the Follow Focus unit itself, right here on this little dry erase ring. The second place that we need to set our marks in conjunction and how we actually figure out where these marks go, is actually out in the scene. So you can see my mark technician, Rich Harrington, out there in with our talent. And what he's going to do is about every 5 to 10 feet, in this case he's simply going to use a pine cone and he's going to mark. That point. Now how specific you are in that distance is really going to depend on how far away you are, the lens you're using. So you might need to do a little bit of playing, but I've found that 5 to 10 feet usually works pretty good.
