Using a dotless i

Using a dotless i

- [Instructor] Hi, I'm Nigel French. Welcome to Type Tips. This week, I'm going to talk about dotting your Is or not. The dot on a lowercase I or lowercase J is referred to as a tittle, T-I-T-T-L-E. And it's amazing how much character just this part of a glyph can convey. The dotless I is a separate glyph. In Turkish, it is its own letter. There may be times when you want to use a dotless I for aesthetic reasons. The most obvious use case being a ligature. A dotless I was notably used by AIGA in their 100 years of design website. What we see here, the I without the dot. And also here, in the word assists. You can access a dotless I through the Glyphs panel. And the easiest way is just to type in dotless, into the find field. You can also input a dotless I with the keyboard shortcut Shift + Option + B or Shift + Alt + B.
