Where do headlines come from?

- [Voiceover] I don't want to burst any bubbles here but contrary to what you may have been told headlines are not delivered by a headline stork. Good headlines may look like they just popped onto the page perfectly formed, but it actually take some work to craft a headline that's both informative and intriguing. So, how do you do it? Where do we even start? First you gotta drill down into the story and figure out what it's really about in order to pull that main idea up into the headline. If someone else wrote the article and you're tasked with slapping an irresistible headline on it then the challenging part is becoming familiar enough with the story that you can boil someone else's words, hundreds or even thousands of their words, down to just a few that smartly some up the rest. But if you're writing a headline for your own article the task can be equally challenging perhaps even more so because when you're so close to the material when you've been slotting its nitty-gritty…
