- If you can rise above the noise of all the other headlines your readers see every day, every hour, and capture their attention with a compelling phrase that promises something informative, intelligent, maybe even entertaining, then the reader is yours. You've got him. And you can deliver your message, your story, to a rapt audience. Now you have the tools to do that. But keep in mind that learning to use these tools takes time. So give yourself time to play with your headlines. Many writers spend an inordinate amount of their time on a single story, I've heard some say up to 50%, just writing the headline. Because they figure, if they don't grab their reader there, then the rest really doesn't matter. And don't be afraid to test your headlines, to learn how to run your own split, or A/B test, of two or more headlines.
