Join John Arnold for an in-depth discussion in this video Adding and updating lists, part of Up and Running with Constant Contact.
People who sign up for your e-mail lists are called contacts in Constant Contact. Before you add contacts to your Constant Contact account, you should create one or more lists. To begin, click on the Contacts tab. Lists allow you to divide your contacts into groups, so you can send targeted e-mails to groups of people with different interests. That way your e-mail content has a better chance of being interesting and wanted by your contacts. To add a new list, click the plus sign next to e-mails lists, and type the name of your list. When you're adding lists, think about the people on your e-mail list and their interests.
Ask yourself, who's going to want to receive different types of e-mails with different content. For my Two Trees olive oil company, I'm going to separate my contacts into five lists. Restaurant owners are going to receive a newsletter from me because they buy my olive oil in bulk. I'd like to keep a list of food critics and invite them to special events. My list of direct customers is for anyone who buys my olive oil at a retail store. I'd like to keep any new customers in a special list. So, I can spend them special deals and offers to keep them as customers in the future. And I'd like to keep a list of what I call VICs, or very important customers.
I'd like to send them offers that no one else receives. To delete or rename a list, click on the triangle. When you choose to delete a list, you'll have two options. You can delete the list and the contacts or just delete the list and leave the contacts in your database. When you've created at least one list, you're ready to add contacts. You can also add lists on the fly when you're adding contacts. I'll show you how to do that in the Adding Contacts section of this course.
